Diego Simeone Blames Confrontation with Fan on Being Abused All Game’
Diego Simeone characterized his response as natural after he confronted a supporter after Liverpool scored a 92nd-minute decisive goal to overcome his team 3-2.
The manager, who was sent off by the referee, stated he had been targeted by constant abuse during the match and his emotions boiled over once Virgil van Dijk found the net.
“As coaches where we don’t have the option to reply or react,” Simeone commented. “But if there are remarks against us, racism or offensive words, we can get angry or retaliate. So when we are getting insulted all the game, when they scored, he faced me and insulted me. I’m human, it’s a natural reaction.”
Simeone avoided detailing whether the comments were racist, adding: “I am not going to get into the exact nature of the abuse. I don’t want to delve into that discussion. I must stay in my role. I’m aware what went on behind the dugout. I can’t solve society’s problems in a single interview. I must live with it.”
This marks the fifth occasion this season that Liverpool have secured a win with a late goal, offering a ideal way to mark manager Arne Slot’s 47th birthday.
“It’s impossible to be 100% sure,” the Liverpool boss said, “however, I’m confident that we are extremely prepared that we can push one more time. I guarantee you, whether we fail to find the net, we will try to push for it. That is the mindset this squad has.”
