The former Brazilian president detained after being deemed a flight risk

Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a military coup in September and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's determination was the potential of the former president's move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist US President Donald Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
